NASHVILLE – Songwriter Mac Davis, who wrote the Elvis Presley classic “In the Ghetto,” was honoured at the BMI Country Awards in Nashville, Tennessee, on Tuesday with tributes from Luke Bryan and Little Big Town.

Davis was given the BMI Icon award for penning five decades of hits in the pop and country worlds including “Memories,” “A Little Less Conversation,” and “Texas in my Rearview Mirror.”

The Lubbock, Texas-native was also a film and stage actor, TV and radio personality and had a solo career as a singer. Davis said he was in awe of Elvis’ personality and thanked him for helping him as a songwriter and later as an artist.

“I watched him when he first came to Lubbock, Texas, and he stood on the back of a flatbed truck . and the girls were just screaming and yelling and climbing up and trying to get to him,” Davis told the crowd of songwriters, artists and music industry representatives. “And I said, ‘Man, I want to do that.”‘

Rascal Flatts performed Davis’ song “Baby, Don’t Get Hooked on Me,” while the four-part vocal group Little Big Town performed the softly poignant “In the Ghetto.”

“I also want to know how you wrote a lyric that tells a woman to shut her mouth,” Bryan joked before breaking into his best Elvis impression of “A Little Less Conversation.”

Boots Elvis wore for If I Can Dream on 1968 NBC TV special up for auction

A pair of boots worn by Elvis Presley during his 1968 performance of If I Can Dream is to go under the hammer.

The white Verde boots are being sold by specialist auctioneer Henry Aldridge & Son later this month and are expected to fetch between £25,000 and £30,000.

If I Can Dream was recorded by Elvis two months after Martin Luther King was assassinated and formed part of his comeback special broadcast on NBC shortly before Christmas that year.

The performance is regarded by fans of The King as one of his “Holy Grails”.The song was written by Walter Earl Brown and was notable for its direct quotations of the civil rights leader.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge said: “Elvis Presley is one of the most iconic figures in music history and we are honoured to be offering for sale the white boots that he wore in one of his memorable performances when he sang If I Can Dream, the song that capped his 1968 NBC TV special.

“Ironically, the very week that the boots are to be sold, Elvis’s album If I Can Dream is set to top the UK album charts – a little over 52 years after the performance he wore these boots for.”

Mr Aldridge said the song was significant because the show for NBC was to be a Christmas special and because If I Can Dream was not a Christmas song, the producers thought Elvis would not want to perform it.

“Elvis recorded If I Can Dream in several incredibly passionate takes. To show producer Steve Binder his performance was so staggering it seemed almost like a religious experience,” Mr Aldridge said.

“Out on the floor with a hand mic, Elvis fell to his knees. For a moment, it appeared like he was back in church, singing the gospel songs of his youth. These boots represent a tangible link to this truly iconic moment in showbusiness history.

“If I Can Dream was the closing number of one of the greatest moments in entertainment history and is regarded by Elvis collectors as one of the ‘Holy Grails’.”

The boots are being sold with an Elvis Presley Museum certificate of authenticity hand-signed by Jimmy Velvet, who founded the Elvis Presley Museum, and a hand-written letter of authenticity from Charlie Hodge, who appeared on the NBC special with Elvis.

The letter reads in part: “Elvis was my good friend and I lived at Graceland in a converted garage apartment Elvis made for me and lived there until his passing in 1977.

“I was Elvis’ stage director and sang harmony on stage with him and handed Elvis his scarves. I also helped him with the set lists for the shows. I also appeared as an extra in many of his films.

“These white Verde brand boots are the boots that Elvis wore on stage on his 1968 NBC TV special. He wore these in the closing number of the show, If I Can Dream, while he was wearing a white suit. Elvis later gave me these boots.”

The boots will go under the hammer on November 14 in Devizes, Wiltshire.

Below is some information about the screening of a movie which may interest some of my visitors.  This movie focuses upon the life and career of Jimmy Ellis who was the public figure known as ORION – The Masked Singer.  I have known about the filming and fund raising for this movie for quite some time.  I even attempted to contact Ms. Finlay back when I first became aware of her film project.  I hoped to give her some truth about the Orion, the singer, saga.  I am very sure that her take on this entire topic is that Elvis is dead and that only those who would not let go of Elvis actually believed that Elvis was alive and involved in the Orion mystery.  I had hoped to instill some true documented facts from my web site into her angle…but was unsuccessful in gaining her interest.

Jesse has asked that I get a copy of this film on DVD for him and so I certainly shall do so as soon as it is made available.

I have heard stories about some of the information which will be included in this film and I have a negative opinion of it so far.

If any of my visitors are interested in seeing a preview of this film, it will be showing in a Memphis location as detailed in the below article from The Commercial Appeal.

Indie Memphis: ‘Orion: The Man Who Would Be King’ examines masked ‘Elvis’ of ’80s

Sun Records Orion emerged from the “mass post-hysteria” surrounding Elvis’s death, said filmmaker Jeanie Finlay.

Singer Jimmy Ellis donned a mask to become “Orion,” the mystery singer fans believed might be the back-from-the-dead Elvis. The story is told in the documentary “Orion: The Man Who Would Be King.” Courtesy of Glimmer Films.

The mysterious career of the masked singer called Orion was part hoax, part stunt and part wish-fulfillment projection — a mutually rewarding if inevitably doomed unofficial collaboration between mourning Elvis fans, eager to embrace the fantasy that their beloved idol faked his death to escape the pressures of fame, and Nashville hucksters, hoping to cash in on grief and tragedy.

Wearing a series of glittery Lone Ranger masks along with Elvis-esque capes, satin shirts and a high black pompadour, the so-called Orion — who emerged a little over a year after Elvis’ alleged death — sang in a rich baritone voice with a remarkable resemblance to Presley’s. He recorded for Sun Records, which by this time was no longer Sam Phillips’ Memphis label but a brand owned by Nashville’s Shelby Singleton. The cover of the first Orion album, titled “Reborn,” was a drawing of a masked Presley-like figure emerging like a resurrection from an open coffin where an identical singer lay. Retailers objected to the image’s ghoulishness, flimflammery and hint of sacrilege, so the cover was pulled for a more generic design. Nevertheless, the message was unmistakable, if unspoken and equipped with wiggle room: Elvis (maybe) has returned.

“Orion’s story unlocks a whole strange time in music and culture, this mass post-hysteria surrounding Elvis’ death,” said Jeanie Finlay of Nottingham, England, who is coming to Memphis to host two screenings of her new movie, “Orion: The Man Who Would Be King,” the documentary that is the closing night selection of the 18th annual Indie Memphis Film Festival.

The screenings take place at 6:30 and 8 p.m. Tuesday at Downtown’s new Halloran Centre, adjacent to the Orpheum at 203 S. Main. Finlay, the film’s writer and director, will participate in question-and-answer sessions after each show.

Finlay specializes in what she calls “stranger-than-fiction” stories. Her credits include “Goth Cruise” (2008), which chronicles an unlikely Caribbean vacation cruise marketed to the pale and nocturnal members of the Goth subculture, and “The Great Hip Hop Hoax” (2013), a BBC production about a pair of California homeboy rappers signed to Sony who were unmasked as Scottish posers, with fake accents and identities.

In the Orion story, Finlay found an ideal subject for her interest in “lying and identity and the masks that we wear.”

Crafted into an 86-minute feature from some 80 hours of footage, “Orion: The Man Who Would Be King” was shot intermittently over the past six years. During that time, whenever Finlay came to the U.S., for a film festival or some other event (she completed an additional three features while working on “Orion”), she would contact her Tullahoma, Tennessee-based director of photography, Stewart Copeland, and the duo would travel to Alabama or Nashville or Memphis or some other location, to capture another piece of the Orion story and to interview the aging friends and loved ones and business associates who knew the singer. (Several of these witnesses died after being filmed but before the movie was finished.)

Finlay said she discovered Orion 12 years ago, at a “car boot sale.” (More or less the English equivalent of a yard sale, with goods sold on card tables and from the trunks of cars.)

“I bought ‘Reborn’ for one pound, and it was just really intriguing,” Finlay remembers. “It had this mysterious masked man on the cover, and it did not quite make sense.”

Finlay began to research Orion. She discovered that the masked man was Jimmy Ellis, a handsome country singer from Orrville, Alabama, blessed — or cursed — with a singing voice that sounded very much like Elvis’.

Groomed to follow in the family tradition as a trainer of champion Tennessee walking horses, Ellis was a show-business late bloomer: He was 30 by the time he decided to make music a career. His lack of success eventually convinced him to participate in a scheme concocted by Singleton to hint that the Sun label’s new mystery singer just might be Elvis, alive after all.

From 1979 to 1983, Ellis recorded and toured as Orion. (The name and details of the fictional Orion biography were taken from a novel about an Elvis-esque singer written by Gail Brewer-Giorgio, who says she was not involved in the Ellis/Orion project.) Whether or not fans believed Ellis was Elvis, they enjoyed posing for pictures and hanging out at clubs with the good-looking charmer. Orion enjoyed the relationship, too: A woman in the film testifies that Ellis was a “trophy collector” with hundreds of X-rated Polaroids of female conquests.

“The fact that the audience was complicit says something about human nature,” Finlay said. “You have women in the audience going, ‘He doesn’t look like Elvis, he’s too tall, and his eyes are a different color, but he sounds like Elvis, so maybe … maybe he could be Elvis …’ We’re more likely to believe a lie than a fact, if it’s something you want to believe.”

The lie took its toll on Ellis, however. “Uneasy lies the head that wears a crown,” Shakespeare wrote four centuries ago: “Orion” demonstrates that this insight remains true today, even when the crown is a mask.

Hard Rock Revealed As Winning Bidder Of Elvis Presley’s Iconic Gold Leaf Piano, Making It The 80,000th Memorabilia Piece Elvis Presley’s 24-karat Gold Leaf Grand Piano Joins the World’s Largest Music Memorabilia Collection

Hard Rock Revealed As Winning Bidder Of Elvis Presley's Iconic Gold Leaf... -- ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 11, 2015 -PRNewswire- -- 2015-11-12 16-09-17

ORLANDO, Fla., Nov. 11, 2015 /PRNewswire/ — Hard Rock has 80,000 reasons to celebrate its world-famous memorabilia collection this week. At the recent Icons & Idols: Rock n’ Roll Auction event at Julien’s Auctions Beverly Hills, Hard Rock International, known for its memorabilia at locations worldwide, has acquired its 80,000th piece — Elvis Presley’s 24-karat gold leaf grand piano. The most important piano to be offered from Elvis Presley’s history will join Hard Rock’s priceless collection of invaluable memorabilia pieces including handwritten lyrics, clothing and instruments from new and legendary music stars like Taylor Swift, Imagine Dragons, The Beatles, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Jimi Hendrix and many more.

“Elvis Presley’s iconic gold piano has now become a cornerstone addition to our world-famous collection, and we couldn’t be happier to celebrate such a milestone with The King’s prized possession,” said Hamish Dodds, Chief Executive Officer at Hard Rock International. “Hard Rock has been curating its priceless music memorabilia collection and sharing with guests around the world for more than 43 years, and Elvis’ piano is an important piece of music history that we can’t wait to share with our guests.”

Presley’s grand piano was played by the King of Rock and Roll inside a music room at his Graceland home in Memphis, Tennessee. Presley originally purchased the piano for his mother in 1955 and installed it in his new home on Audobon Street. The piano was placed into storage after Presley’s mother’s death, until Priscilla Presley decided to adorn the piano in 24-karat gold-leaf finish as a gift for the couple’s first wedding anniversary.

“Hard Rock has a far-reaching connection to music history and we’re always looking to add show-stopping pieces to our collection, such as the King’s priceless piano,” said Jerry Fraize, Director of Memorabilia for Hard Rock International and winning bidder on the piece. “While we are still deciding where this piece will reside within our properties, the front-runner at the moment would be the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Tampa, fitting for one of the most successful casino properties in the world.”

Hard Rock Cafe, Hotel, Casino and Live venues across the country host some of the world’s most fascinating pieces of memorabilia that celebrate defining moments throughout music history. Some of the most popular and iconic pieces include Jimi Hendrix’s Gibson Flying V guitar, John Lennon’s handwritten draft of “Imagine” lyrics and The Rolling Stones’ Vox Phantom Mark III Guitar.

Hard Rock Memorabilia Through the Ages
Hard Rock International is the world’s original curator of music memorabilia and with its newest additions has now expanded to an 80,000 piece collection. Hard Rock memorabilia is showcased at Hard Rock Cafes, Hard Rock Live venues and Hard Rock Hotels and Casinos around the world to keep music history accessible to its guests. At each of its properties, Hard Rock creates authentic and unique music memorabilia experiences that resonate and pays homage to music history in each city. Among the pieces in the collection are guitars and other instruments, clothing and costumes, platinum and gold LPs and other rare artifacts.

The story of the birth of Hard Rock International’s memorabilia collection is of itself a part of music history.  The collection was started when Eric Clapton, a regular customer at the original Hard Rock Cafe London, asked the staff if he could hang his guitar on the wall to mark his favorite bar stool as “his spot.”  They did, and one week later, a package from The Who’s Pete Townshend arrived with a guitar and a note bearing the message, “Mine’s as good as his!  Love, Pete.”

MEMORIES OF THE KING – Elvis Presley

This song was sung by Jesse, who IS ELVIS, and released on a 15 song CD in 2012.  THIS is the album that should be the #1 seller all over the world. Elvis’ very OWN voice just as he currently sounds.

It would have been a much greater honor of the man, Elvis, if the world had recognized his voice and fell in love with his own album.

Elvis always wondered if people loved his music or just the Elvis image. Just as he always wondered if people loved HIM or just the image.

The world has had a chance to show him how much he is still honored and loved for the man that he always was and still is when these 15 songs came out.

It is disgraceful that this fantastic album was slandered by ignorant fools who are too blind to recognize Elvis when they hear him.

Sorry for the rant…but this is a timely topic.

Most Billboard 200 Albums By Artist

By

Elvis Presley

Photo of Elvis Presley in 1960.

Elvis Presley, the King of Rock & Roll, leads all acts on the Billboard 200 with the most charted albums: 107 (between Aug. 17, 1963 through Oct. 10, 2015). Presley most recently hit the list with the collection Elvis Presley Forever, which peaked at No. 11 on the Sept. 5, 2015-dated chart. Presley’s incredible sum is dozens ahead of the next-largest total, the 73 collected by country titan Willie Nelson.

(It’s important to note that many of Presley’s albums were released and found popularity before Aug. 17, 1963, the first week of research for this survey.)

Charted Albums Artist
107 Elvis Presley
73 Willie Nelson
69 Grateful Dead
64 Bob Dylan
62 Frank Sinatra
58 Barbra Streisand
57 The Beatles
56 Johnny Mathis
54 Johnny Cash
53 Neil Diamond
53 Neil Young
52 James Brown
52 The Rolling Stones

The list of acts with the most hits on the Billboard 200 albums chart was compiled from the charts dated Aug. 17, 1963 through Oct. 10, 2015. (Aug. 17, 1963 is the date when Billboard’s two separate pop album charts for stereo and mono recordings joined to become one all-encompassing weekly chart.)

Also from Billboard…

Elvis Presley With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, If I Can Dream – No. 21 — For the first time since 1977, Elvis Presley has earned a pair of new top 40-charting albums in a calendar year on the Billboard 200 chart. Presley’s new effort, If I Can Dream, starts at No. 21 on the Billboard 200, shifting 20,000 equivalent album units in the week ending Nov. 5 (according to Nielsen Music). It follows his No. 11-peaking compilation Elvis Presley Forever, which arrived on the Sept. 5-dated tally. Presley last notched two new top 40 sets back in 1977, the year he died (on Aug. 16), with Moody Blue (No. 3) and Elvis In Concert (No. 5). Notably, in 2003 Presley did visit the top 40 with two different albums, but one of them was a holdover from 2002. His greatest hits set Elv1s: 30 #1 Hits debuted at No. 1 in 2002, and lingered in the top 40 until early 2003. Later that year, the set’s follow-up compilation, Elvis: 2nd To None, debuted at No. 3.

The new If I Can Dream album was recorded with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and marries old Presley vocals (from songs like the title track and “How Great Thou Art”) with newly recorded music. The decidedly classical-leaning set zooms to No. 1 on the Classical Crossover Albums chart, giving Presley his first leader (and entry) on that tally.

I want to welcome a very special new contributor to my web site.  Below you will read a professional anyalysis which has been done of Jesse’s 15 song CD ELVIS FOUND ALIVE.   Daniel Vållberg has shared his expertise with us all on my Messages to Jesse page and I have obtained his permission to share it publicly.

My heartfelt thanks to Daniel who I welcome so warmly to my web site.

Dear Linda and Jesse,

I just would like to add a comment regarding the CD “ELVIS FOUND ALIVE”. Linda, I read your recent post about the world’s reaction to this release and therefore I would like to encourage the both you and Elvis/Jesse with my professional opinion and view on this matter. I am a professional composer and music producer and I have taken a good listen to the CD analyzing the voice and character of the person performing the songs. And here’s my conclusion:

There’s no doubt what so ever that the songs are performed by Elvis/Jesse at his present age. I will state a few reasons for my conclusion below.

1. I have compared the voice on this CD to other skilled people who have actually imitated Elvis’ voice (Andy Kaufman, Jon Cotner etc.). The difference between all imitators and the actual voice of Elvis/Jesse on this CD is the fact that the imitators have caught some of Elvis’ most obvious voice features and during their performances they emphasize these characteristics in order to sound like Elvis. In effect they’re not actually singing the song from their heart, but rather their focus is on the actual voice more than the essence of the lyrics and feel of the song. Although their performance is sometimes very convincing, they always lack the real feel and actual soul of the real Elvis. In this CD the soul and feel is very clear in Elvis’/Jesse’s voice. It is very clear that he’s not trying to imitate anyone, but rather to perform the songs. His personal experience and personality shines through, so does his characteristic voice features but in a very differnt way from the imitator’s. When Elvis/Jesse is singing the voice characteristics are there naturally and not forced or over emphasized. There is a distinct difference between emphasizing a feature than having it involuntarily shine through. This is the big difference between the real voice of Elvis on this CD and other imitators.

2. Another feature that distinguishes the real voice of Elvis on this CD and imitators is that the voice on this CD is not an imitation of Elvis’ early voice, but rather a recording of Elvis’ present authentic voice. If this CD was an attempt to fake Elvis’ voice the voice is to unlike the Elvis of old times for a con to dare to release it. We have to remember that a con would to have as many people as possible to believe the voice in order to fool them. So his primary concern would be to produce a voice as alike the voice of young Elvis. However this would never be the goal of the real Elvis today. He would rather be focused on performing the songs from his own heart in this very time and moment. This is so clear on this CD that in my opinion there’s no doubt what so ever that the voice belongs to an older Elvis/Jesse.

3. It is also clear on the CD that Jesse has not been able to perform as much as he could before. This is of course because of him being under protection. He simply could and would not walk around singing Elvis songs all the time since his purpose of going undercover was to protect himself and his family from harm. He also must have been careful not to sing too much in his private life (when no one was assumed to be around) since his first priority was to keep himself from being discovered and revealed. But considering that he has not been able to sing as much as he did during his professional musical career and also the fact that he is almost 40 years older now, he has managed to maintain his wonderful voice remarkably well. I’ve heard artists sound much more unlike themselves after many years away from their former profession.

Anyhow I hope that my input might add to people’s joy over the fact that this CD actually contains Elvis’ recent voice and work.

Love to all of you! And my warmest greetings to you Elvis/Jesse and Linda.

Most kindly, Daniel Vållberg

Am I the only person who thinks this Elvis robot is distasteful?  I don’t know if this is something new or not.  It is the first time I have ever seen or heard of this and I cannot believe that the manufacturer actually got approval from the owners and controllers of Elvis’ name, image, and likeness to create this atrocity.  But, then anything to keep the Elvis money machine rolling along.  Money, money, money and greed, greed, greed.

This appears to be a second-hand item judging from the seller’s  description.  I have chosen this one to display because of the number of close up photos of the “thing“.  Here is the link to this seller’s ad.  I am not being critical of this seller…just the people who licensened the manufacture of this.  This is on par with the “Elvis – Mr. Potato Head” which Jesse detested.

The interiors of Graceland mansion will feature the Presley family’s Christmas décor starting on November 20 for seasonal holiday tours through his birthday celebration in January. Included will be his traditional red velvet drapes as well as Presley family Christmas artifacts on display around several trees throughout the home.

Yearwood, a life-long fan of Elvis Presley, is one of the biggest-selling female performers in country music history, a member of the Grand Ole Opry, the author of three best-selling cookbooks and host of the Emmy Award-winning Food Network show, “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” currently shooting its seventh season.

“I LOVE Elvis, always have,” stated Yearwood.  “I’ve visited Graceland many times, but never at Christmas. I’m incredibly honored to be invited to flip the switch at Graceland’s holiday lighting ceremony this year.”

In addition to Elvis’ own holiday décor, visitors to the famous Memphis mansion will experience an interactive, state-of-the-art iPad tour that provides a fully immersive experience for guests. Visitors can take a multimedia tour of the music landmark that allows users to dive deeper into the story of Elvis’ life through unique archival audio, video and photo elements.  A customized iPad tour experience for kids and tweens features interactive photo activities geared for younger visitors.  Read more about the iPad experience here.

Channeling his inner Elvis, Santa and his red jumpsuit-inspired suit will arrive by limousine and police escort. Santa will be available for pictures with the kids following the lighting ceremony. The lighting event featuring Trisha Yearwood is free and open to the public.

Regular paid tours of Graceland will operate the day of the lighting ceremony from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. A special Christmas at Graceland Package can be booked online and includes one night at Elvis Presley’s Heartbreak Hotel for two, two VIP Tours of Elvis Presley’s Graceland, a Graceland Christmas Ornament, the “Merry Christmas…Love, Elvis” CD and an Elvis Presley collectible bear. I truly enjoyed seeing Trisha Yearwood tonight at the Graceland Christmas Lighting Ceremony.  She was so perfect for that occasion.  Seeing her brought to my mind a video which I posted on my site back in January of this year.  As I am sure most of you know, Trisha is the wife of Garth Brooks.  I was so thrilled with what Garth said in this interview. So, I want to share it with everyone again.  Listen closely to what he says about Elvis.

As I also mentioned when I posted the video of Garth before, I love the song by Jesse “The Dance“.  It is my favorite of the 15 songs which Jesse recorded.  This song was, of course, recorded by Garth earlier.  If you have not listened to this song in the music player at your top left screen, please do so now.  Listen closely and you will see that Jesse changed the words to make this song about Elvis and his fans and his leaving us.
