Choose who must hold the title of the king!

PLEASE DON’T FORGET TO VISIT “THE KING OF MUSIC” POLLING SITE AND VOTE FOR ELVIS EVERY SINGLE DAY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THIS YEAR 2015.  WE SIMPLY CANNOT LET ANYONE ELSE CLAIM ELVIS’ RIGHTFUL TITLE.  BELOW IS THE LINK TO THE SITE FOR VOTING:

http://thekingofmusic.com/

They have announced the King for the Month of June…..

The King of June – Elvis Presley With 21,965 Votes.

I see that we have fallen short of the total votes for Elvis in the month of June compared to our total votes in the month of May.  Let’s all make a reminder for ourselves which we will see every day.  This is important.

A good friend to our site, Linda F C, discovered this week that there is a poll receiving votes for the Song of Ages.  A link to this second poll is shown at the very top of the site on which we are all voting every day for the KingofMusic.  Below is the link to the SongofAges voting location.

Elvis has the number 1 song presently as well as number 3Suspicious Minds is number 1; Love Me Tender is number 3.

Let’s add this to our daily to-do list in addition to voting for the King of Music.  We can keep an Elvis song in first place here as well.  As you will see below Suspicious Minds is far ahead in the lead now; and was also the number one song for the month of June.

http://songofages.com/

Choose the song of ages!

The Song of June  – Suspicious Minds – Elvis Presley With 5,079 Votes.

The best song election is a very complicated issue. Because of this, election will be separated into at least two phases. In the first phase we will determine the list of songs. In the second phase election will start all over again, no more than 70 the most popular songs will be in the final voting list. You should suggest your favorite song here.

  • Suspicious Minds – Elvis Presley (56%, 20,014 Votes)

  • Billie Jean – Michael Jackson (22%, 7,930 Votes)
  • Love Me Tender – Elvis Presley (13%, 4,716 Votes)

In the spirit of our Independence Day and to say Happy July 4th to all of my fellow Americans, I want to share the song which should be our new national anthem should ours ever be replaced.  We have played this song by Elvis for our 4th of July for many years.  I have a 45 which I used to get out to play, but now it is more efficient to play it on line.

I wish everyone a wonderful and safe holiday this weekend.

I thank my good friend, Bets who posted this on our Messages for Jesse comments recently.

America The Beautiful by Elvis Presley

THURSDAY, JULY 2, 2015

This is a very touching video about Glen Campbell.  It is so sad to see what is happening to this good man.

I thank a nice friend, Barb, for sharing this with me on Facebook.

Barb wrote: “Glen refers to Elvis in one of his performances. No other entertainer is mentioned throughout by Glen. I just found that very special & very touching.”

Barb also says that the statement by Glen about Elvis is only seen in the full movie.  The movie is scheduled to air on the CNN Headline News channel.  It will be airing at 9 PM EDT Friday, July 3rd.

I thank my friend, Tracey, for making me aware that the U S Postal Service has released the photo of Elvis which they have selected for the new “Forever” Elvis stamp to be debuted at Graceland on August 12th during the Elvis Week ceremonies.  I love their choice so much.  So glad that they are using an actual photo of Elvis rather than an artist’s interpretation.

The U.S. Postal Service revealed the artwork Thursday for an Elvis Presley Forever stamp, which will be part of its Music Icons series.

The stamp features a 1955 black-and-white photograph of Presley taken by William Speer. In the bottom left corner, between the words “Forever” and “USA,” is a small gold crown, a nod to Presley’s nickname, The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll. Presley’s signature, in gold ink, is featured along the right side of the stamp.

Past honorees include Johnny Cash, Ray Charles, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.

Priscilla Presley, the late singer’s ex-wife, will join Postmaster General Megan Brennan in dedicating the stamp on Aug. 12 at Graceland in Memphis as part of its annual Elvis Week celebration. The singer died on Aug. 16, 1977 at the age of 42.

Sony Music’s RCA/Legacy Recordings will release an exclusive music CD titled “Elvis Forever,” which will be available online and in select Post Offices beginning Aug. 12. It will include a previously unreleased performance of Presley’s “If I Can Dream.”

Presley was previously featured on a 29-cent stamp in 1993.

The Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum has called the 1993 stamp the most popular U.S. commemorative stamp of all time.

I am especially looking forward to the CD to be released in conjunction with the new stamp as mentioned in the above news article:

He said he was doing OK today but had not felt well for the past two days.  I am sorry that I have nothing to share…but thought that everyone would like to know that he called and that he is all right.

Hamilton The King gets a new watch

— The Ventura Elvis 80 – 80 hours power reserve for Elvis Presley’s 80th birthday.

Elvis Presley Hamilton

The history of Hamilton Watch and Elvis Presley goes all the way back to 1961, when the King of Rock‘n’Roll wore the ground-breaking Ventura in the movie “Blue Hawaii.” Elvis wore his own Ventura throughout his life and the Ventura became known as “the Elvis watch.”
The original Ventura, designed by then-outside industrial designer Richard Arbib, has been a best-seller for the brand since its introduction in 1957. In addition to “Blue Hawaii,” the Ventura featured heavily in the “Men in Black” trilogy, looking both vintage and futuristic.

Redesigning an icon can be a huge risk for a brand, as the new design runs the risk of alienating established lovers of the watch and failing to gain traction with new buyers. Hamilton has revisited and modernized the Ventura design several times, in various sizes, while still keeping the original in its collection, something that not many companies have been able to do successfully. In fact, I can’t think of another watch from the 1950s that is still for sale in its original design, making the Ventura that much more special.
This year, Hamilton introduced another all-new version of the Ventura, officially called the Ventura Elvis 80.

80 for 80
The Ventura Elvis 80, unveiled in January of this year, is designed to commemorate what would have been Elvis’s 80th birthday. In a bit of serious serendipity, the Ventura Elvis 80 Auto uses the new H-10 movement, which offers a remarkable 80 hours of power reserve. Most mechanical watches offer between 42 and 46 hours of power reserve, not enough to get through the weekend. The 80 hours that the H-10 offers means you can take off the Ventura Elvis 80 on Friday evening, put it on your nightstand and it will be still be running when you put it back on your wrist on Monday morning.

Hamilton-Ventura-Elvis-80-automatique

The watch is so attractive, however, why would anyone want to take it off?

The Ventura Elvis 80 is also available in a quartz version. Both the auto and the quartz versions are in 42.5 x 44.6mm steel cases, and the surfaces are alternately brushed and polished. The iconic triangular shape, the unique sloped sapphire crystal covering the rounded dial, the orange second hand and a choice of black rubber or leather strap rounds out the design details.

“Working on the new Ventura Elvis 80 was about the reinterpretation of an icon, the first electric watch from 1957, which despite its 50 years, remains a futuristic model!” says Sylvain Dolla, president, Hamilton Watch. “To keep its revolutionary character, the triangular shape has been preserved. The sloped sapphire crystal and a curved dial give the new Ventura Elvis 80 a very contemporary and technical design. Another objective was the perfect integration of leather, rubber or metal bracelets which was of course a design challenge for this unique triangular shape.”

Two new Elvis historical markers to be dedicated in August

On August 11, the Shelby County Historical Commission will be dedicating another two markers as part of Elvis Week. The commission will be commemorating Elvis’ hangout the Poplar Tunes record shop as well as the Lauderdale Courts, where the Presley family once resided.

The markers are part of an “Elvis trail” of sorts that the commission has been developing over the last few years. In 2014, the commission placed a marker at the Family Dollar store at Chelsea and Thomas. The former location of American Sound Studios was where Presley recorded his 1969 “comeback” sessions, and where producer Chips Moman and the studio’s house band conjured up over a 100 chart hits.

Markers have also been placed at the site of Presley’s favorite ride, the Zippin Pippin at Libertyland; at Lansky Brothers, the “clothier to the king”; the Plastic Products Record Plant, where Elvis’ first single “That’s All Right” was pressed; and his alma mater Humes High School.

The August 11 ceremony at the Poplar Tunes site – 308 Poplar, now home to ASAP Bail Bonds – will take place at 10 a.m. and be followed with a second ceremony at the west side of the Lauderdale Courts (282 North Second Street) at 11 a.m.

Event organizer Jimmy Ogle notes that due to space limitations at both sites, there will not be an elaborate seated setup as was the case with the American Studios marker last year. But there will be a special “Walk in the Footsteps of Elvis” tour between the two locations, which are four blocks apart. Local tour guides Mike Freeman and Sue Mack will conduct the procession from Poplar Tunes north up Lauderdale Street to Market Avenue, and west to North Third. Ann Shaw and Alan Grossman, the team behind the “Memphis Map for Elvis Fans,” will also be part of the walk.

Jerry Weintraub

 Hollywood producer

Born: September 26, 1937;

Died: July 6, 2015

Jerry Weintraub, who has died of a heart attack aged 77, was one of the last of the classic Hollywood showmen. Dynamic and ambitious, he produced hit movies such as Karate Kid and Ocean’s Eleven and worked with some of the industry’s biggest stars, including Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, George Clooney and Brad Pitt.

His career as a promoter took a giant step in 1970 when after a lengthy courtship he persuaded Elvis Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker, to let him promote Presley concerts. It was at a time when Presley was beginning to do live shows after years of concentrating on movies.

Weintraub and his partner Tom Hulett introduced such improvements as a modern sound system for Presley, an experience that propelled Weintraub into the top ranks of promoters.

Roy C. Bennett, Elvis Presley Songwriter, Dead at 97

By

Songwriter Roy C. Bennett died July 2 in Queens, N.Y., at the age of 97, leaving behind a legacy of credits that include work for Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Louis Armstrong and more.

Along with songwriting partner Sid Tepper, Bennett published over 300 songs. The duo wrote more than 40 tracks for Presley alone, including almost half of the massively successful Blue Hawaii soundtrack.  In 2002, they were honored in Memphis for their contributions to Presley’s career.

They also wrote songs recorded by the Beatles, Carl PerkinsPerry Como, Eartha Kitt, Duke Ellington, Marty Robbins and Wayne Newton, among others.

Bennett started his songwriting career at the age of 11, Variety reports, teaming with Tepper from the start. Tepper died this past April at the age of 96 of natural causes.

Both vets of WWII, Bennett and Tepper’s first hit came with “Red Roses for a Blue Lady” in 1948, originally recorded by Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians before vocalist Vaughn Monroe made it a No. 3 hit single.

Nashville honor set for local drummer

John Andrew Prime, jprime@gannett.com   2:27 p.m. CDT July 9, 2015

D.J. Fontana, a Shreveporter and one of the rock world’s legendary drummers, will be honored in Nashville this weekend.

Fontana, who was drummer for rock legend Elvis Presley during the singer’s pioneer years, will be honored Saturday with the Church’s Chicken Legends Series Award.

Fontana will be one of three top drummers honored at the Music City Center during the  NAMM (National Association of Music Merchants)/World’s Fastest Drummer World Finals. Those drummers are W.S. Holland, who played with Johnny Cash, and Richie Albright, who worked with Waylon Jennings.

Born Dominic Joseph Fontana here on March 15, 1931, he performed with Presley 14 years, after being hired to provide percussion for the then-unknown Mississippi singer in late 1954, though some sources also say he was brought on board in 1955. Fontana had been an in-house drummer with the Louisiana Hayride, the popular radio show in the Municipal Auditorium sponsored by radio station KWKH and its owner at the time, The Times.

Fontana performed on almost 500 RCA recordings for Elvis during that time and became one of the nation’s most recognized drummers. Songs on which he performed include “Heartbreak Hotel,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Hound Dog,” “Love Me Tender,” “All Shook Up,” “(Let Me Be Your) Teddy Bear,” “It’s Now or Never, “Are You Lonesome Tonight,” “Little Sister,” “Return To Sender,” “ Can’t Help Falling in Love,” “Viva Las Vegas” and “Blue Christmas.”

He also performed on the 1968 NBC television special that served as Presley’s comeback vehicle after a hiatus occasioned by his stay in the Army, movie work and shifts in the U.S. music market caused by the British invasion.

“I learned the value of simplicity at the Hayride,” Fontana related in the 1996 book “Go Cat Go!” by Craig Morrison. “I heard Scotty (Moore) and Bill (Black) and Elvis one night and knew that I couldn’t mess up that sound. That’s why I always play what I feel. If that won’t work, I just won’t do it again. I think the simple approach comes from my hearing so much big band music. I mixed it with rockabilly.”

Fontana was inducted into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame in 2009 and later that same year was entered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in the sideman category, an honor shared by another local music legend associated with Presley and a host of other performers, guitarist James Burton.

FRIDAY, JULY 17, 2015

Below are two images which I have permanently included in my letterhead to Jesse on which I write him every week…and have for a very long time.  We have “adopted” each other as our “family“.  I am so very honored and blessed to have Jesse in my life.

                 Letterhead to Jesse

Loyalty is very important to Jesse still, just as it always was to Elvis.  There were so very few in his life before 1977 who stood loyal and true to him before he left and who have continued to do so since he left.  It is shameful that those people for whom he sacrificed so much in order to give them jobs and provide income for them and their families have abandoned their loyalty to him just for the public attention and financial gain.  It is reported that Howard Hughes, who also had faked his death (while listening to the reports of his own death on radio) remarked to his wife (paraphrasing) “This is how to find out who your real friends are:  Die and then see who comes to your funeral.

I shall be loyal to Jesse until I draw my last breath.  I have promised him that.

Loyalty is very important to me from those who are considered my friends as well.
